July in the Garden: Savoring Summer's Beauty
July is when the garden truly comes into its own. After months of planning, planting, and tending, our landscapes reward us with vibrant blooms, lush foliage, ripening vegetables, and the constant activity of birds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial pollinators. It's a time to slow down, enjoy the fruits of our labor, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.
As temperatures rise, watering becomes increasingly important. Deep, infrequent watering encourages stronger root systems than frequent shallow watering. Water early in the morning whenever possible to minimize evaporation and reduce the risk of disease. A fresh layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and perennial beds helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep soil temperatures cooler during the hottest days.
Many summer favorites are now putting on an impressive display. Coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, daylilies, phlox, bee balm, hydrangeas, and roses provide weeks of color while attracting a variety of pollinators. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage many annuals and perennials to continue flowering well into the season.
July is also an excellent time to harvest. Tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, blueberries, herbs, and other garden favorites are often reaching their peak. Harvest vegetables regularly to encourage continued production, and don't hesitate to share your bounty with neighbors, friends, or local food pantries.
While enjoying the garden, keep an eye out for common summer pests and plant diseases. Regular inspection often allows problems to be addressed before they become widespread. Whenever possible, choose environmentally friendly management practices that protect beneficial insects and support a healthy garden ecosystem.
Don't forget to make time simply to enjoy your garden. Sit with your morning coffee, listen to the birds, watch butterflies visit the flowers, or take an evening stroll through your landscape as the day's heat fades. These quiet moments remind us why we garden in the first place.
We hope you'll join us at our upcoming Wakefield Garden Club activities as we continue to learn from one another, share ideas, and celebrate the joy of gardening together. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just getting started, there's always something new to discover.
Happy gardening and enjoy all that July has to offer!
