Spring Fever: Let the Garden Games Begin
If you garden around here, you know the feeling: one day you’re crunching across frosty ground, and the next you’re out there in a light jacket convincing yourself it’s definitely time to plant everything. Welcome to the most exciting (and slightly chaotic) stretch of the gardening year!
The Great Garden Tease
Ah yes, spring. A warm spell in March whispers, “Go ahead… plant those tomatoes.” But seasoned gardeners know better. Around here, patience is just as important as compost. Our average last frost usually lands somewhere between mid-April and early May, so while it’s tempting to go all-in, this is the time for strategic enthusiasm.
What You Can Do Right Now
Don’t worry—you’re not stuck just staring at your garden beds. There’s plenty of fun to be had:
- Cool-season crops are your best friends: Think peas, spinach, lettuce, and radishes. These tough little overachievers love the chill.
- Divide and conquer perennials: Hostas, daylilies, and ornamental grasses are waking up—now’s the perfect time to split and share (hello, garden club plant swap!).
- Start seeds indoors: Tomatoes, peppers, and herbs are ready to get cozy under grow lights or sunny windowsills.
- Clean up—but not too much: Leave some leaf litter for beneficial insects still snoozing. Your garden is an ecosystem, not a showroom.
The Annual “Is It Too Early?” Debate
Every garden club has that member who already planted everything and claims, “It’ll be fine!” Sometimes they’re right. Sometimes they’re replanting in May. Either way, it keeps things interesting—and gives us all something to talk about at the next meeting.
Try Something New This Year
Why not shake things up a bit?
- Plant a pollinator corner with native flowers
- Experiment with a vertical garden or trellis setup
- Grow something you’ve never tried before (ground cherries, anyone?)
- Add a whimsical touch—fairy garden, painted pots, or a funky scarecrow
Garden Wisdom of the Month
“Plant with optimism, but keep a frost cloth handy.”
Because hope springs eternal… but frost sometimes springs back.
Let’s Hear From You!
